Gil Velho

Mestre Gil Velho, also known as Gilberto Silva, was born in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil in 1944. He began practicing capoeira at the age of 12 and became a student of Mestre Bimba, the founder of the Regional style of capoeira. After that he joined the group Senzala de Capoeira and became one of its most important members. He later became the leader of the group and helped to spread capoeira throughout Brazil and internationally.
